An infection in the throat caused by streptococcus bacteria is strep throat. It is more common in young children than others. It spreads from one to another easily by contact with nasal discharges or saliva.
It causes sore throat, fever, swollen and sore neck glands, inflamed tonsils, white patches in the throat or on the tonsils, or headaches. Additional symptoms in a child could be abdominal pain and vomiting.
Strep throat is treated with antibiotics. It can be prevented by regular hand washing and avoiding contact with people who have the disease.
