Brain stroke, which was earlier limited to older age groups is now gripping youth into its clutches. On the occasion of World Stroke Day, observed on October 29 to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, city doctors alarmed out at the increasing number of cases of `brain stroke’ among the younger population, with lifestyle habits being identified as key risk factors for the same.

Here’s everything you need to know about it:

* One of the key factors that minimise the damage is early detection. Watch out for certain signs that indicate a potential stroke: Is one side drooping? Are the arms of one side weaker than the other? Is the speech jumbled or slurred? If you see any of these signs, then immediately connect with a medical expert.

* Strokes are treatable if detected in time. If you treat it as an emergency and head to the stroke unit, the damage from the stroke can be minimised.

* The usual form of treatment includes clot-busting drugs that break blood clots. If given earlier, it shows greater benefits. Another treatment is to remove the clot to improve survival rate and reduce disability if the stroke is caused by an artery blockage.

Signs and symptoms of stroke

The main signs and symptoms of a stroke can be remembered with the word ‘FAST’:

Face — the face, including the mouth or eye, may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile

Arms — the person may not be able to raise both the arms and keep them there because of weakness or numbness in one arm

Speech — slurring speech or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake

Time — if you see any of these signs or symptoms, it’s time to dial emergency number.

Other stroke symptoms may include the following:

  • Trouble walking

  • Confusion

  • Paralysis

  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

Learn to recognise the signs of a stroke and act ‘FAST’. Don’t wait to see if any symptoms stop, every minute counts. So seek immediate medical help if you think you or someone else is experiencing any of these signs.
